So What Is
Heartburn and why does it occur?
Heartburn is the common term for gastroesophageal reflux
disease (GERD). Heartburn occurs when digestive juices in
the stomach are go the wrong way and back up into your
throat. Usually, these digestive chemicals remain in your
stomach until they pass downward into the intestines. But
when the valve at the top of your stomach doesn't close,
digestive juices can flow into your esophagus.
Unlike the stomach lining, the lower esophagus is not
protected from the corrosive effects of the acid, so the
result is a burning sensation in the throat. Although it is
not in your heart, it feels as though it is coming from
there, thus it is called heartburn.
Antacids typically relieve the symptoms of heartburn.
